Doubling consonants
In one-syllable words, double the final consonant when a single vowel
precedes the final consonant.
Examples: slap slapping, tip tipped, flat flatter, and pit
pitted.
If two vowels or a vowel and another consonant precede the final consonant
in one-syllable words, don't double the final consonant.
Examples: pair paired, real realize, park parking, and rent
rented.
In
words that have more than one syllable, double the final consonant when
a single vowel precedes the final consonant and the stress falls and
the last syllable of the stem once the ending is added.
Examples: submit submitted, occur occurred, refer referring,
and begin beginning.
If
two vowels or a vowel and another consonant preced the final consonant
in words with more than one syllable, don't double the final consonant.
Examples: refer reference, relent relented, deal dealer,
despair despairing, and beckon beckoned.
